Foundation and Initial Growth

Young Poong Group was founded by Jang Byeong-hee and Choi Ki-ho in 1949. The two founders who were natives of Hawnghae-do came to the south after the liberation of Korea from the Japanese rule and started a business supplying mining machines and selling motors. Initially, they expanded business into various areas such as mining, shipping and trading business, contributing to the reconstruction of the Korean economy. After Head Office was destroyed during the Korean War, they rebuilt the business in Busan. They founded AegukHaewoon ("Patriotic Shipping") company and promoted growth by engaging in shipping and the import/export trade.

Leading the Mining and Non-Ferrous Metal Industries

In the 1950’s, Young Poong focused on analyzing and exploiting minerals and founded Chilseong Mining and Daeyu Titan Industry. Young Poong, after acquiring Yeonhwa Mine in Bonghwa-gun, Gyoengbuk Province, developed it as the domestically largest base to produce lead and zinc. Thereafter, in 1970, Sukpo smelter was established, and zinc smelting technologies were adopted, laying the foundation for the domestic non-ferrous metal industry. Sukpo smelter increased its annual zinc production to 31,000 tons by 1977, securing global competitiveness.

In 1974, the Onsan smelter of Korea Zinc was established in response to the Korean government’s policy to develop the heavy chemical industry. The Onsan smelter grew to have the world’s largest zinc smelting capacity, and Young Poong and Korea Zinc secured an unchallenged position in the global market through partnership.

Business Diversification and Entry into e-Business

Young Poong entered into e-business in the 1900’s and began manufacturing flexible printed circuit (FPC) boards. Its technological prowess was recognized with an achievement to supply printed circuit boards (PCB) to the National Aeronautics and Space Agency(NASA) for its Mars rovers. In 2025, Young Poong acquired Korea Circuit which is a company specializing in PCBs and rose to become the second largest company in terms of market share of the domestic PCB market. Young Poong expanded business areas by supplying products to global IT companies such as Samsung Electronics and Apple.

In addition, Young Poong acquired Signetics, a company specializing in semiconductor packaging and entered into the semiconductor back-end process market. Signetics showed strengths in the field of non-memory semiconductor, secured global customers and continued its growing trend.

In October 2009, Young Poong Sukpo smelter was awarded an appreciation plaque in the "2009 Power Demand Resource Market" in recognition of its contribution to the stability in power demand and supply during the summer season with the maximum electric power generation. Young Poong Sukpo smelter reduced 182,000kW load equivalent to 53% of the load reduction quantity of 364,000kW in the entire power demand resource market.
